Studying in Europe may feel like a dream for “someday”—especially when you start thinking about the cost. But before you put that dream aside, Spain deserves a closer look.
For Filipino students, it offers an appealing combination: affordable study possibilities, opportunities to learn a new language, and the chance to experience Europe while working toward a qualification.
If you are comparing destinations for your next chapter, here are five reasons to consider Spain.
1. Studying in Europe could be more achievable than you think
Spain offers relatively affordable options through its public universities. Choosing a smaller city can also help make everyday expenses more manageable than living in Madrid or Barcelona.
Your actual costs will depend on the school, programme, and location. Some universities charge higher fees for non-EU students, so Filipino applicants should check the applicable tuition and budget for accommodation, insurance, transport, and other expenses.
The possibility is worth exploring: with the right programme and a realistic budget, a European education may be closer than you imagined.
2. Your study experience can take you beyond Spain
A school break in Portugal. A visit to an art museum in France. A few days exploring Italy’s historic streets.
Studying in Spain puts these experiences within reach. With a valid Spanish long-stay visa or qualifying residence permit and passport, students can generally visit other Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, subject to entry conditions. This is permission for short visits, not an automatic right to work or settle in another country.
For a student living away from home for the first time, those experiences can build independence, confidence, and a broader view of the world.
3. Eligible students can gain work experience while studying
For many students, the appeal of studying abroad includes discovering how people work and communicate in another country.
In Spain, eligible holders of a higher-education study authorisation can work alongside their studies, generally for up to 30 hours per week, provided the work is compatible with their course. Different conditions apply to other study categories, so checking your chosen programme is essential.
A suitable job could help you practise Spanish, build professional connections, and contribute toward everyday expenses. Jobs are not guaranteed, so employment should support your experience rather than be the foundation of your study budget.
4. You can come home with more than a qualification
Spain offers English-taught programmes, particularly at postgraduate level, while Spanish remains the main teaching language. That means some students can pursue a course in English while learning Spanish through daily life.
At first, it might be ordering coffee or asking for directions. Later, it could be joining a conversation with classmates or speaking more confidently at work.
Learning to navigate life in another language is an achievement of its own—and a skill you can carry into your future.
5. Filipinos have a meaningful longer-term benefit to understand
For those who may eventually qualify to live in Spain beyond their studies, Spanish nationality law includes a provision relevant to Filipinos.
Filipino nationals of origin may qualify to apply for Spanish citizenship after two years of qualifying legal, continuous residence immediately before applying, compared with the general ten-year requirement. Other requirements, including good civic conduct and integration, must also be met.
Time under a student stay authorisation does not count toward those two years. A person would need to obtain a qualifying residence status and meet the applicable conditions. Citizenship is a separate application, not an automatic result of studying in Spain.
This gives eligible Filipinos a shorter residence requirement to consider as part of their longer-term plans, while their immediate focus remains choosing a worthwhile education.
